The kanji puzzle game implementation across commits 743454c (Phase 1) and d15597e (Phase 2) is reviewed and approved. The code is well-structured, correctly implements the reviewer-mandated fixes, passes all quality gates, and complies with the constitution. The issues listed below are minor or advisory and do not block shipping.

Review Summary

1. Game Logic Correctness -- PASS

  • engine.ts: All 5 attribute evaluation functions are correct. Radical and onYomi are binary (correct/wrong) as required by reviewer spec. StrokeCount (+/-2), grade (+/-1), and category (super-group) are tri-level (correct/close/wrong). Tests cover all edge cases including empty onYomi arrays.
  • categories.ts: All 20 semantic categories are assigned to exactly 5 super-groups, with full coverage verified by test.
  • daily.ts: JST timezone handling uses Intl.DateTimeFormat with Asia/Tokyo -- correct. Hash fallback for dates outside the 365-day schedule is deterministic. Puzzle numbering is 1-indexed from epoch 2026-03-01.

5. Code Quality and TypeScript Correctness -- PASS

  • All files pass npm run typecheck with zero errors.
  • All files pass npm run lint with zero errors/warnings.
  • All files pass npm run format:check (Prettier).
  • No any types used. Proper TypeScript generics and type narrowing throughout.
  • No additional npm dependencies added.
  • Components are well-decomposed with clear single responsibilities.
  • "use client" directives are correctly placed on all interactive components.
  • Page component (page.tsx) is a server component with static metadata export.

6. Test Coverage -- PASS (with advisory note)

  • 57 core logic tests: engine (21), daily (11), storage (11), share (5), categories (9) -- comprehensive.
  • 13 component tests: page (2), GameBoard (4), GuessInput (7) -- adequate for key interactions.
  • All 204 tests pass (includes tests from other features).

7. SSG/SEO Metadata -- PASS

  • page.tsx exports static Metadata object with Japanese title, description, OpenGraph, and Twitter card metadata.

Advisory Notes (non-blocking)

A1. In-progress game save uses status: "lost" as placeholder

File: /home/y.shida1/yolo-web/src/components/games/kanji-kanaru/GameContainer.tsx, lines 171-181.

When saving an in-progress game to localStorage, the code sets status: "lost" as a placeholder. The comment on line 172-173 acknowledges this. On reload, the status is correctly reconstructed from the saved guesses (line 63-83), so this does not cause a functional bug. However, if a user inspects localStorage or if the restore logic changes in the future, the misleading "lost" status could cause confusion. Consider using a third status value or saving status: "playing" (the GameHistory type would need to be extended to support this).

Severity: Low. No user-facing impact currently.

A2. Column header label "意味" vs feedback key "category"

File: /home/y.shida1/yolo-web/src/components/games/kanji-kanaru/GameBoard.tsx, line 12.

The last column header is labeled "意味" (meaning), but the underlying feedback evaluates "category" (semantic category with super-group relatedness). This matches the plan spec which uses "意味カテゴリ" but shortens it to "意味" in the column headers. The HowToPlay modal says "意味カテゴリ" on line 52, which is more accurate. This minor label inconsistency between the board header and the How-to-Play explanation could confuse some players. Consider either using "意味カテゴリ" or just "分野" (field) as the column header, or keeping it as-is for brevity.

Severity: Low. The plan explicitly uses "意味" as the column header shorthand.

A3. Dataset limited to 50 grade-1 kanji

The plan called for "all 2,136 Joyo kanji." The current implementation contains 50 grade-1 kanji only. The plan also acknowledges this may be a starter set. With 50 kanji over 365 days, each kanji repeats 7-8 times per year. The small pool also makes the game significantly easier (experienced players will quickly narrow down the answer). This is acceptable for launch but should be expanded.

Severity: Medium for long-term engagement, but acceptable for initial launch. Already acknowledged in plan scope.

A4. Missing opengraph-image.tsx

The plan specified creating src/app/games/kanji-kanaru/opengraph-image.tsx for dynamic OG image generation. This file was not implemented. The metadata in page.tsx includes OG title and description but no OG image URL. Social shares will lack a visual preview image.

Severity: Low. Not critical for launch but impacts social sharing virality.

A5. Missing planned tests: ResultModal.test.tsx and StatsModal.test.tsx

The plan specified component tests for ResultModal and StatsModal, but these were not implemented. The existing 13 component tests cover the page, GameBoard, and GuessInput -- the most interactive components. The modals are relatively simple display components and are indirectly tested through the page test's mock.

Severity: Low. The most important components are tested.

A6. Streak calculation uses browser local time for "yesterday"

This correctly uses formatDateJST to convert to JST, but yesterday.setDate(yesterday.getDate() - 1) subtracts one day from the browser's local time, then formats to JST. If the browser clock is in a timezone far from JST, this could yield an incorrect "yesterday" date. For example, at UTC 00:05 on March 2 (which is JST 09:05 March 2), subtracting one day from the UTC Date gives March 1 UTC, which formats to March 1 JST -- correct. But at UTC 15:05 on March 1 (which is JST 00:05 March 2), subtracting one day gives February 28 UTC, which formats to March 1 JST -- this is "today" not "yesterday". The streak would break incorrectly.

A safer approach would be to parse todayStr (already in JST), subtract one day from the parsed date, and re-format.

Severity: Medium. Affects streak accuracy for users in timezones significantly behind JST. However, the primary audience is Japanese users (JST), so the impact is limited.

A7. todaysPuzzle useMemo dependency array

kanjiData and puzzleSchedule are derived from JSON imports and recreated on every render (via as casts on lines 39-40). Since they are new array references each render, useMemo will recompute every time, defeating memoization. This is not a correctness issue since getTodaysPuzzle is deterministic and fast, but it is technically incorrect memoization. To fix, either move the casts outside the component or use useMemo for the data references.

Severity: Very low. No observable performance impact with 50 entries.
